KALS encourages active participation in a wide variety of activities to complement the academic life of each student. Arts, music, sports and culture is a strong focus for our students.
Sport
Sport is an important aspect of school life and students have many opportunities to participate in different sports. During the year secondary school teams enter Northland Area Schools’ competition in futsal, volleyball, basketball, rugby, netball. Players are then selected for the Northland teams. Junior and Middle school participate in Rugby, Netball and Soccer tournaments with other schools throughout the year. Other school teams are developing such as Ki o Rahi.
Maori Culture
The emphasis of Maori culture is on Te Reo Maori, haka, powhiri, waiata and the values of whanaungatanga (relationships) and manaakitanga (hospitality). All students learn the school haka and waiata and participate in powhiri (welcoming) when manuhiri (guests) are welcomed (karanga) into our waka (place) and whanau (family). Students also learn Te Reo in their classrooms and have the opportunity to learn NCEA Te Reo via video conferencing. The school haka is the school scripture (you are the light of the world...) in Te Reo Maori set to traditional Maori choreography and is called Ko Kotou te Whakamara o te Ao.
Arts
Students have the opportunity to participate in Dance, Drama and Visual Arts. The Arts is an important part of KALS Curriculum, which enables our students to explore their God-given creativity and develop their knowledge and skills. The Arts programmes are delivered by specialist teachers.
Music
Music features strongly in the life of the school through weekly assembly items, classes, student bands and performance at local events. As well as the normal music classroom programme, the children also have the opportunity to learn an instrument by receiving tuition from itinerant music teachers on a fee-paying basis.
