Kaitaia Abundant Life School teaches the New Zealand national curriculum (as do all State and State Integrated NZ schools). This includes the NZ Curriculum, National Standards for Reading, Writing and Mathematics and the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) to Level 3 (Year 13). Notwithstanding this, each subject is still taught from a biblical perspective and Christian values are holistically woven right throughout the fabric of our teaching and our programmes.

 Key Aspects:

        · Developing a knowledge of God: His nature and character.

·High expectations of student achievement and behaviour including attitude, work ethic, tidy appearance, homework completion and Godly conduct.

· Emphasis on every student achieving to the best they are capable of.

· Catering for individual learning styles including Special Needs and Gifted & Talented Programmes.

· Emphasis on the Key Competencies in the New Zealand Curriculum:

o Thinking

o Using language, symbols and text

o Managing self

o Relating to others

o Participating and contributing

· Having an enterprising culture.

Classes in Years 1-9 have a home room and class teacher for the core curriculum. Students also receive instruction from other staff as teachers share their curriculum strengths through elective courses eg in Art, Music and Science.

Classes in Year 10-13 each have a form room and a form teacher who has daily contact and maintains a pastoral interest in each student’s welfare and progress. Individual subjects are taught by subject specialist teachers.

Students enter the New Entrants class in their first year of school and are introduced to the culture and ethos of the school through a range of educational and developmental activities. When the student is ready they are introduced to a mixed reading programme which includes phonetics, a numeracy programme and the wider curriculum.

Every effort is made to ensure that students in the early years gain a solid foundation in preparation for a broad general education in subsequent years.
